Baby Skylar

This shoot was a long time coming and I was so excited to do it!  First of all, Wendy has been one of my best friends since we were in high school.  My girls were the flower girls in her wedding.  She and Ty have waited a long time for Skylar to join their family.

Skylar was only four days old when we did this session.  I figured that meant that she would sleep like a champ, but she had other ideas.  She was awake for a while and then in and out of sleep for the next little while.




I love that little half-smile!



I made this crocheted bowl last year and then kept forgetting to use it!  Skylar was only happy in it once she got her arms free.



This blanket that Skylar is lying on in the next two pictures is actually one that Wendy made for me.  Skylar zonked out hard once she got on it.





Congratulations again, Wendy and Ty!  I am so happy for you!

Baby Miles

Baby Miles was almost six weeks old when we did this shoot.  That is definitely not a newborn, when it comes to a photo session.  He was quite alert and awake for most of it, although Mom did manage to get him to sleep for a few shots. 

Thank you to Ashley and Eric for letting me be part of this.  Miles is absolutely adorable!

Baby Carly

Isn’t she gorgeous?

She was ten days old and two weeks over-due to begin with, so that made for one wide-awake baby.  All of the shots that look like she’s sleeping were just me getting lucky enough to catch her with her eyes shut!

I love that I was able to get an outside shot of a newborn.  It will probably be the one and only until next year since it is starting to get cold already,

The Surats

Baby Teegan was the best baby ever.  He slept the entire time. 

His skin was also the best newborn skin that I’ve ever seen.  He was hardly red at all and didn’t need much touching up.

He was also Melody and Tyler’s first boy after having two girls.  (I know exactly what that’s like.  Dad now will live vicariously through his boy.)

Tyler is a baseball fan from Atlanta and said that they will be moving there in the next few weeks.

I’m sure this little slugger fit right in. 

(Side note about this dump truck that you see in the boy photos and dads living vicariously through their sons.  My third baby, and first boy, was born nine days before Christmas.  This truck is what Santa brought him.)

Baby Anderson

Remember Jonna's maternity shoot?  This precious baby boy is her update.  He was five days old when I took these pictures.  I have GOT to figure out the secret to getting a baby to sleep during a session.  Anyone have any tips?  I had a heater going, plus a heating pad underneath him as much as possible. 

I always forget how tiny newborn babies are until I look them square in the face and see how tiny their heads are, or see their tiny baby buns.

This is my favorite.  I love the processing, the look on his face and his tiny little hands.

Baby Bella

Baby Bella was seven days old when we did this shoot.  She is absolutely adorable and her mother is gorgeous!

The shoot took place at Tiffanie’s house in their master bedroom.  We had planned to do it at my house in the morning, but the smoke that we were getting from a wildland fire made the lighting difficult.  It was better by the afternoon.  Tiffanie said that Bella was a fantastic sleeper, everyday except that day, of course!  Isn’t that how it goes?  She really did do great and I think we got a lot of great shots.

Baby Johnson

I was lucky enough last week to get to do another newborn shoot.  This baby belongs to my friend, Jaelyn.  She was 20 days old, and while that’s still a newborn, it’s just a tad too old to be doing the sleeping baby poses.  She wouldn’t sleep and needed the pacifier for about half of the pictures.   I am thankful that Jaelyn put up with me messing with her baby.

I was still using the 50mm lens and natural lighting.  We did the shoot in Jaelyn’s office and I didn’t have much room to move around.  It was a new challenge and I think I got some good ones.



This is a different basket than I used in my first shoot.  I found it at the Nazarene Thrift Store for $5.  It is the perfect size and is closer to the ground, which makes it easier for me to look down on it.  I love it!  This baby is a pretty good size already, about nine pounds, and she filled up the basket!

My first newborn

I’m not talking about MY first newborn, but my first newborn shoot.  This beautiful baby belongs to my friend, Kellyn.  He was nine days old (I think) and the perfect subject!  The shoot took place in Kellyn’s living room, where she had big windows that made for perfect natural lighting.

I’ll admit to being a little overwhelmed.  Since it was my very first newborn shoot, I didn’t really have any idea what I was doing!  I had read a bunch of blogs to kind of get an idea, but it is completely different when you are right there doing it yourself.  I shoot with a Canon Rebel xSI.  I only have the kit lens, so I borrowed my sister-in-law’s 50mm 1.8 lens for this shoot.  I am still learning how work with the f-stops and shutter speed to get what I want in focus and still have the right light.  I was pretty disappointed when I uploaded these pictures and found a ton that would’ve been great if only they were in better focus.  Live and learn, right?

So without further ado, here are my favorites.  Feel free to leave me constructive criticism, but please remember that I am new to both the picture taking and the editing!
